During winter, ProXCskiing.com has released five technique videos for classic cross-country skiing. Here, Vasaloppet runner-up Anton Karlsson explains why you should work on getting better technique and what you can gain from it.

Cross-country skiing is a very complex endurance sport; even the very best continuously strive to improve in the various techniques, and finding your way to efficient skiing is essential. This winter, ProXCskiing.com has released five technique videos for classic cross-country skiing. Vasaloppet runner-up Anton Karlsson, one of the instructors in the technique videos, explains why the technique is so important.

Why should you put energy into improving your technique?

“Simply put, we strive for a technique where we can move forward with as little energy cost as possible. Consuming little energy at a given work is also called skiing economy. An improved skiing economy makes your skiing more efficient, and you can potentially move faster on the Vasaloppet course with the same energy consumption. Of course, this also increases your endurance at a given speed because the improved technique makes your ride less costly, and you are thus able to do the work for a longer time. The technique thus plays a decisive role in the results of, for example, Vasaloppet. A more efficient double poling, double poling with kick, diagonal, and downhill skiing in different terrains will make a big difference to the final time.

An improved technique is often more “correct” with the body’s standard movement patterns and can thus reduce the risk of injury by minimizing unnecessary strain. Finally, better technique also provides a better experience on the track, which in turn, for many, increases the motivation and desire to train and compete!”

Why use videos to learn about techniques?

“Using video material to learn about technique is valuable for several reasons. Firstly, it provides a visual reference to relate to. Videos also make it easier to understand and emulate techniques. With access to good video material, you can happily film yourself or ask someone else, then make comparisons and identify areas for improvement. The videos demonstrate pedagogically with instructions and comments explaining why we choose to ski a certain way; we also explain the most common mistakes seen on the trails and solutions for these with the idea that you will be able to relate to certain “technique keys” on the trail when practicing.”

For whom are the videos helpful to watch?

“Technique videos are useful for skiers of all levels. Beginners need to learn basic techniques with clear instructions to learn how all the techniques are connected. Experienced skiers and elite athletes at a slightly higher level can use videos for fine-tuning and getting other perspectives on technique to take further steps in their development. Regardless of their current level, all skiers benefit from regularly reviewing and optimizing their technique.”

Is it too late to sharpen your technique for Vasaloppet?

“It’s definitely not too late to improve your technique for Vasaloppet; the lower your current level, the more opportunities for fast improvement are provided. Regular training and continuous monitoring of your technique by studying technique videos in the coming weeks can significantly improve your chances for a successful Vasaloppet.”

In addition to Vasaloppet runner-up Anton Karlsson, we see Elin Mohlin as one of the instructors. She is also an expert cross-country skier.
