The Russian Ski Federation has expressed disappointment with the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) decision to extend the suspension of Russian athletes from international competitions. This means that Olympic champion from Beijing 2022, Alexander Bolshunov (pictured), and his national teammates will not be allowed to compete in the World Cup or the upcoming Winter Olympics.

“The Russian Ski Federation (ALVSR) expresses deep disappointment with today’s decision by the FIS Council to continue denying Russian athletes the right to participate in international competitions – even as neutral athletes (AIN),” the Russian Ski Federation wrote after the decision was confirmed.

Veronika Stepanova was quick to comment:

“FIS certainly knows how to create drama on a consistent level,” she wrote on her Instagram account immediately after the decision.

In media interviews, she went even further:

“It’s all very simple. Vladimir Putin is my president, and my country is always right. If this is the reason why some shady, anonymous people don’t allow me to compete internationally, then that’s a price I’m ready to pay,” she told Swedish media outlet Expressen.

“If I ever see them, I would like to say this: you are banning me and my teammates because of our political beliefs. Next, you should ban Israelis and Americans who support Trump. That is what your system is about: dismissing people who think differently,” Stepanova said.

“We will use all means”

The Russians are furious over Tuesday’s FIS decision, which they claim is political discrimination. They now vow to “use all available means” to overturn the ruling and promise to take the case to court.

“This decision continues a discriminatory policy against our athletes and violates the fundamental principle of political neutrality enshrined in the FIS regulations. ALVSR will continue to fight for equal and fair treatment of our athletes,” the Ski Federation wrote.

“We will also use all available means to ensure that athletes are not punished for political circumstances beyond their control — including taking the matter to court.”

“ALVSR remains committed to the principles of fairness, non-discrimination, and equality in sports,” the statement published on the Ski Federation’s website concluded.
