Just under a month ago, it was confirmed that the Czech Ski Association had to cancel the planned round of the World Cup in Nove Mesto at the end of January/beginning of February. Several candidates stepped up to take over.

Now, the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) has decided who will host the three-day race weekend, just under a month before the World Championships in Trondheim: According to langrenn.nion.mk, it will be Italy, and the races will be held in Cogne, in the Aosta Valley. The last time was in 2019. Italy thus edged out both Swedish applicants: Ulricehamn and Gällivare.

The competition schedule and formats will remain the same as originally planned for the round in the Czech Republic: The race weekend opens with a classic team sprint on Friday, January 31, followed by a classic sprint on Saturday, February 1, and concludes with a 10km freestyle race on Sunday, February 2.

The organizers now hope to recreate the magic from the last time they hosted a World Cup at the foot of Gran Paradiso, when there was an Italian double victory in the men’s sprint: superstar Federico Pellegrino won, followed by Francesco De Fabiani in second place and France’s Lucas Chanavat in third. On the women’s side, Jessie Diggins won, ahead of Germany’s Sandra Ringwald, with Sweden’s Johanna Hagström in third.

Two World Cup Rounds and World Championships

In addition to the World Championships in Trondheim, which will be held from February 26 to March 9, Norway will host two World Cup rounds this coming winter: in Lillehammer from December 6 to 8, and in Holmenkollen during the weekend of March 15 to 16.

For the 2024/2025 Tour de Ski, FIS has made significant changes compared to previous editions. Among other things, all stages will be held in Italy.
