Biathlon superstar drops bombshell: “I’ve made my decision”

Biathlon Preuss
Just weeks before the World Cup opener, the overall winner of last winter’s World Cup delivers a highly unexpected message that sparks speculation.

Last season, she won the overall World Cup for the first time and claimed both gold and silver at the biathlon World Championships. Now, she’s chasing her first Olympic gold. But it could all be over soon.

Franziska Preuss has come with potentially discouraging news, casting doubt on her future career.

“I’ve made my decision. I know what happens next, but I won’t say anything more until after the 2026 Olympics,” said the 31-year-old German to Skis Info.

The upcoming Winter Olympics in Milano-Cortina will be her fourth. Her best Olympic result so far is a bronze medal in the relay at Beijing 2022. However, she has yet to earn an individual Olympic medal — something she hopes to change this winter.

“For the moment, I am focused on this goal,” said Preuss.

More relaxed outlook

Leading up to the Olympics, the World Cup remains her primary focus. Preuss says that winning the overall title last winter was a huge relief. Now that she has the crystal globe on her shelf, she’s entering the Olympic season with less pressure.

“I’m taking one race at a time as they come,” she said, adding:

“I haven’t changed anything in my preparation, and I would be happy if I can have the same good season as last year.”

The Biathlon World Cup starts in Östersund on November 29. The 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy will take place from February 6 to 22.

Injuries and illness

The World Cup champion hasn’t had an ideal buildup to the Olympic season. A roller ski accident in early September that required surgery forced her into several weeks of alternative training.

Preuss has also been open about her long struggle with illness throughout her career. She’s now taking strict measures to avoid infections.

One of several stars considering retirement

Preuss isn’t the only biathlon star delivering surprise announcements about their future.

Last week, an Austrian biathlete announced his sudden retirement before the season even began, and just days later, one of France’s top Olympic hopes revealed that he is also considering quitting.
