German biathlon star Laura Dahlmeier has been confirmed seriously injured following a climbing accident in the Karakoram mountains in Pakistan. The accident occurred around midday on Monday, July 28.

An international rescue team is currently coordinating the operation.

The 31-year-old’s manager 31-year-old’ss in a press release from the German broadcaster ZDF.

“Laura Dahlmeier was out with her climbing partner on July 28 when she was caught in a rockslide. The accident happened around noon local time, at an altitude of about 5,700 meters. Her partner contacted emergency services, and a rescue operation was launched immediately. But because the accident occurred in a very remote area, the helicopter was not able to reach the site until Tuesday morning, July 29.”

What’s confirmed is that Dahlmeier is seriously injured. Her climbing partner is making their way down from the 6,069-meter-high mountain Laila Peak.

World and Olympic Champion

Laura Dahlmeier won two biathlon gold medals at the 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang. She was for many years one of the main rivals to Norwegian biathlon stars Tiril Eckhoff, Marte Olsbu Røiseland, and Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold. At the 2017 World Championships in Hochfilzen, she claimed five golds and one silver in six races.

Since retiring in 2019, Dahlmeier has worked as an expert commentator for the German broadcaster ZDF.
