Just before Christmas, the 28-year-old opened up about her breakup. Jasmi Joensuu announced she was getting divorced after five years of marriage. The Finnish ski star was heartbroken. At the same time, she said she hoped to rediscover joy in life.

Now, Joensuu has done just that. She and hockey star Markus Granlund are in a relationship. Granlund confirmed it during the Finnish national championships last weekend, where Joensuu took silver in the 5-kilometer race behind Kerttu Niskanen.

Dog-sitting

While Joensuu competed in her final race of the season, Granlund played “babysitter” to Keijo, Joensuu’s beloved dog and faithful companion.

“I haven’t talked much about my private life publicly, but I won’t deny it either,” he told YLE.

Granlund plays for the Swiss team Geneva-Servette and is the younger brother of NHL star Mikael Granlund.

Joensuu is not the only Finnish World Cup star to go through a breakup this year. Last weekend, Riitta-Liisa Roponen revealed that her husband is demanding a divorce after a dramatic marriage.

Won the World Cup, bad luck at the World Championships

Joensuu achieved her first career podium in the World Cup during the Tour de Ski, led the sprint World Cup standings early in the winter, and was one of the big gold favorites in the sprint at the World Championships in Trondheim. But things didn’t go as planned.

It was the Swedish women who dominated in Granåsen. They took all six gold medals at this year’s championships. Jonna Sundling claimed three of them, including the sprint and team sprint.

In the sprint, Joensuu was knocked out in the semifinals and finished ninth. In the team sprint, she placed fourth after an organizational blunder during qualification ruined the chances for her and her partner. Joensuu was furious afterward.

Nevertheless, Joensuu won the overall sprint World Cup for the 2024–25 season. She is the first Finnish skier to do so since Virpi Kuitunen in the 2006–07 season.

Shock announcement during World Championships preparations

In February, Joensuu made a statement that shocked the entire skiing community. The 28-year-old, who was in the middle of the best season of her career so far, revealed that she is considering retirement as early as next year.

The news came as a major surprise, contrasting sharply with what everyone had expected: That the rising star would continue at least until the 2029 World Championships on home soil in Lahti.
